Gio’s Bakery & Cafe, 711 Foothill Blvd, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011
Gio’s recently opened a second location in La Canada. We visited on a Sunday afternoon and it was already busy. Gio’s is a French-inspired café. The menu includes breakfast, paninis ($15.35 & up), cold sandwiches, crepes, salads, bowls, full espresso bar, and drinks. They also have pastries (cakes, tarts, croissants, muffins, eclairs, cream puffs, beignets), and baguettes. Breakfast is served all day on Sundays. Sandwiches aren’t cheap, but they come with a mixed green salad.
The baguettes and croissants are imported from France…but they must be imported frozen and par-baked because they aren’t as good as what you’d expect.
Baguette ($3.95): on the softer side, not any better than what you’d get a Trader Joe’s
Ham & cheese panini ($15.35): French ham, butter, Swiss cheese on a roll with a mixed green salad. The roll was different than their baguette but it looked like a smaller, par-baked baguette. It was soft and crunchy where it had been pressed. The filling was fine – layers of soft French ham, Swiss cheese, and butter. Very simple. I’ve had better but it wasn’t bad. The mixed green salad was a handful of greens and dressing – nothing else. The dressing was French dressing, I think – quite sweet and thick. They could have made a little effort to make it nicer.
The ambiance is nice enough; it has a old-fashioned European café feel. You can sit inside or outside on the strip mall sidewalk. I probably won’t be back. Gio’s is decent but you can get much better baguettes and baguette sandwiches in LA (though not in La Canada).
3 of 5 stars

Find Out Your Ceresian Senator Name!
(made with love, the d20 gang put a lot of work into diversifying character names, & as I was doing my etymology post I noticed similarities but no clear formula so I thought I’d write one for funsies)
First Name: The first letter of the street you grew up on (if you didn’t grow up on a street feel free to use a town/city name, or a landmark!).
I included alternates for gender reasons - a/o means the name can end with either a or o depending on your preference, e.g. Emilio vs Emilia. You can probably also throw an -e at the end of some of them if (like me) you wanna be a bit nonbinary about it.
A - Aurelius (Adria, Andrea) B - Bianca (Bacchus, Basilla) C - Cara (Cassius, Camila/o) D - Dominic (Donatella/o, Daniela) E - Emanuel (Emanuela, Emilia/o, Eduardo) F - Francisco (Fabrizia/o, Fiero) G - Giuseppe (Graciela, Gio) H - Hercules (Hero, Hermes) I - Ignazia/o (Imelda, Isabella) J - Jupiter (Jiovanni, Juno) K - Katarina (Kronos, Celeste) L - Lorenzo (Luca, Loretta) M - Marco (Messina, Manuela) N - Nunzio (Natalia, Nico) O - Oliverio (Ouranos, Roberta/o) P - Patrizia/o (Paula/o, Pallas) Q - Quirinus (Pietro, Ricarda/o) R - Rizzo (Rafaela/Rafael, Renata) S - Silvio (Sabina/e, Serafina/o) T - Titian (Tullia/o, Terra) U - Ulysses (Urania/Uranus, Rosetta) V - Valentina/o (Venus, Vesta, Vesuvio) W - Luigi (Mario, Rosalina) X - Xanto (Romeo, Diana, Apollo) Y - Ylenia (Saturn/Saturnus, Minerva) Z - Zappa (Mars, Melete, Diana)
Last name: The last letter of your favorite food
A - Bucatini B - Capellini C - Bavette D - Matriciani E - Pappardelle F - Scialatelli G - Spaghettini H - Tagliatelle I - Trenetti J - Vermicelli K - Anelli L - Cascatelli M - Castellane N - Cavatappi O - Farfalle P - Garganelli Q - Passatelli R - Paccheri S - Rigatoni T - Strozzapretti U - Testaroli V - Cannelloni W - Agnolini X - Cappaletti Y - Fagottini Z - Sacchettoni
Voila! Now just put “Senator” (or another Roman govt position if you want) in front of it. I’m Senator Andrea Trenetti!
I also did some optional funsies for those of us with dice we never get to use:
Roll 1d20
If it lands on a 1, you are straight up a loaf of bread. use the Bread Table under the cut
If it lands on a 2-10, you are a pasta dish. Use the last name chart for your first name, and use the Pasta Dish Table under the cut for your last
If you roll a nat 20, you are may choose b/w
a popular snack food. Use the Snack Table under the cut
.
you can also use the first name chart and use the snack table for your last name if you want
a Ceresian folk deity. not a senator anymore, but arguably funnier. Use the Deity Table under the cut
otherwise, use tables above as normal.
In The Ravening War, all of the senators also got “tribune” titles like “Tribune of Triscutia” - if you want one of those, you can either:
Use the last name table but use first letter of your favorite food
Use either the Bread, Pasta Dish, or Snack table under the cut
Bread Table
Roll 1d12 or use your birth month
1. Panettone (you have a little Candian on your mother’s side of the family) 2. Muffuletta 3. Pane rustico 4. Panino 5. Pita 6. Tortano 7. Baguette 8. Ciambella 9. Fugassa 10. Friselle 11. Crescentina 12. Boule
Pasta Dish Table
Roll 1d20 or how many mozzarella sticks do you think you could eat in one sitting? (if you can’t eat mozzarella sticks imagine carrot sticks instead)
1. Arrabiatta 2. Amatriciana 3. Bolognese 4. Capresi 5. Bottarga 6. Indiavolati 7. Siracusani 8. Scarpariello 9. Boscaiola 10. Fagioli 11. Lucchesi 12. di Mare 13. Napoletana 14. Puttanesca 15. Ragu 16. Sorrentina 17. Tartufo 18. Valtellina 19. Zucca 20. Cacio-pepe
Snack Table
Roll 1d6, or rate the last movie you saw from 0-5 stars (or 1-6 if you don’t want to do math)
Tostito(s)
if you like you can also use Fritos or Dorito(s)
Chex (you can add a last name that describes the kind of Chex if you want)
Pepperidge (like Pepperidge farms)
Ritz
Kellogg (you can add a last name that describes the kind of Kellogg’s food item if you want)
General Mills
you can forgo the “Senator” title if you so chose and just be “General Mills”
the ancient Roman govt Ceresia is based on had a lot of interplay between the military and the government so like. Generals still have govt. sway.
you could also just be “Senator Mills”
Deity Table
Roll 1d6 or tbh just pick which one you like they’re all fun
you are now known as Ben the Original, but you have never forgotten your past life as Uncle Ben.
you are Little Miss Sunbeam, a maiden goddess of light and happiness
you are the Triple God, the Holy Trinity, and your aspects are Snap, Crackle, and Pop
you are a Keebler elf, one of a large family of forest spirits hidden deep in the mountains on the border of Candia and Ceresia
you are Umaemon, an otherworldly cat-like being with unknowable powers and dual aspects of both cat and human.
you are the Pillsbury Doughboy.

Having breakfast in Vietnam – What to go for? ( Eps 1)
Having food in Vietnam is presumably an unforgettable experience for every tourist who has ever landed in this lovely country. Being a part of Asia, Vietnam’s cuisine is largely affected by Chinese culinary background but they still keep the quintessential crux of their Vietnamese ancestors' food.
With an exotic number of enticing choices of food available almost everywhere, ranging from street vendors to fancy restaurants, finding what to eat for breakfast is quite a hard task.
To help you, and others people who adore this country, (or just simply want to discover the subtlety of its ultimate gastronomy), this blog will be so specific about what dishes you should try at least one whenever you come to Vietnam. Hopefully, my first blog will suffice to fulfill your passion for Vietnam's signature food!
1. Banh Mi Viet Nam:
Recently, Banh Mi has gained its popularity throughout the world as an East-style sandwich that you just want to go for a bite.
Although many claim that this was entirely the product of French colonialism, there are lots of proofs to show a clear distinction between French baguette and this mouthwatering dish.
Banh mi is usually chosen for almost every Vietnamese breakfast as it is nourishing, convenient and absolutely appetizing. One of the most important components that make Vietnamese banh mi differ from other versions is its filling. The savory gravy goes with an immense amount of filling including xa xiu ( roasted pork ), paté, xiu mai(Vietnamese meatballs), gio cha ( Vietnamese meat cake), …made this concoction a perfect start for the day.
Source: Internet
2. Pho:
No one has ever come to Vietnam that hasn’t tried Pho!
Despite looking simple outside, Pho has a completely fascinating complexity of textures and flavors. Normally, Pho is made from rice soft noodles called “banh pho”, which is rice flour batter steamed and then cut into long and bite-sized strings, to go with some slices of meat, and fatty, fragrant broth. The most crucial component that builds the soul of this dish is evidently the broth, or consummé. Pho’s broth is usually made exquisitely by simmering chicken, pork or beef bones for hours with several kinds of herbs and spices like roasted onions, cinnamon, star anise, cardamom, ginger and many other things.
There are so many kinds of Pho that you can choose for your breakfast but if you want to enjoy the traditional version of this dish, Pho ga( chicken noodles soup ) and Pho bo( beef noodles soup ) are the best choices.

3. Xoi( sticky rice ) :
As its name, xoi or sticky rice a extremely sticky dish that you don’t even want to touch it, but frantically delicious. Traditionally, making xoi is actually a progress that asks for time, divine experiences and your fastidiousness from choosing ingredients, preparing, steaming to decorating. Each type of xoi requires different recipes and ingredients.
For a dynamic morning, Vietnamese people often eat xoi with a gigantic numbers of side dishes like omelets, lap xuong ( Vietnamese sausages ), gio cha, caramelized pork and eggs,…
Source: Internet
4. Fried rice:
This dish sounds a little bit wrong when being put on breakfast list as tourists normally have this kind of rice for their lunches or dinners as main courses. But trust me, this is what we eat in mornings in Vietnam!
Source: Internet
Each restaurant and family has their own recipes for this strange rice and none of them is similar to others. You can choose to have fried rice with eggs only, or try to add beef and pickles to your rice! They are all wonderful combination!
5. Banh cuon:
If you ever have a chance to come to Vietnam, this is one of the must-try foods because of its attractive outlook and impressive way of making!
For many Vietnamese people, banh cuon has become their stable dish in mornings. To make this kind of “banh”, people will have to make a batter from rice flour, and then use a wooden ladle to pour it into a round tray, steam and then roll up with some wood ears, minced cooked meat.
Source:Internet
One more interesting thing is that this food is often served with a bowl of sweet and sour fish sauce, some slices of chilies and a smidgen of black pepper for the incredible smell.
Source:Internet
Vietnamese cuisine has so many appeal aspects that can definitely make you fall in love with this country. Coming to Vietnam, trying all types of local and national luscious dishes is thing that I can proudly boast about.
Follow me on Tumblr for many more astounishing and eclusive things which can only be in Vietnam!
Thanks for your love to this blog!

Mission accepted! Sohin who I love very much, I care you lots! We're here for you always and we always have an open ear for you! I know our age gap gets in the way of some discussions at times but my DMs are always open if you want to talk about stuff, rant or vent about anything really or maybe talk to Gio huEHUE winK WONK You're so strong and I admire that but it's okay to not be okay at times! I wish I could give you a big warm hug rn (っ´▽`)っ Hope you feel better soon, Baguette mom (。’▽’。)💜
I only hope my old boomer age doesn't block you from expressing yourself to me. I know I can seem quite serious at times, hopefully I can put the young ones at ease.
I don't want to bring negativity in the gang. Me requesting to get some laughs is already shameful for me, but don't you worry about a single thing. I know when to be blue but I also know when to be silent.
Hmmm, what could you possibly assume my conversations with Gio look like, I wonder...

i just had lunch at pho luca in carytown va (just opened december 6). good authentic beef noodle soup (pho tai and pho bo vien). the meatballs with baguette are so yummy (like a french beef ragu having a love child with a swedish meatball). the egg rolls (cha gio) is so crispy. i have not tried the chicken rice dish yet but will def do so when we drop my nephew back to college. @sassyeggs74 have you tried this pho shop yet?
i have only tried three vn restaurants in rva before this one but i must say that pho luca is the best vn restaurant in richmond i have been to. the menu is not huge - kinda reminds me of the stripped down menu for in n out in that it only has damn good dishes on the menu.
the owner is gregarious and funny - he tried so hard to hire my nephew and his gf!

We did it.. we made it to the big four digits. I never thought I’d get here, honestly. When I made this blog in May, I never thought I’d get to here. Maybe 2 or 300 followers, at the most?? Never this.
Here’s some sappy words to some people, I’ll cut this off because it’s going to be very long.
@daily-jojoanimals (I’m putting you at the top in case everything gets too sappy for you) I love your art a lot! The bright colors, the lines... I can’t draw animals for my life, but you? You’re amazing at it! Your blog is great and I hope that it gets more attention because you work really hard on all those drawings!
@dailydiadop nOON WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN… I love you and you’re probably my best friend. I have absolutely no idea where I’d be without you. Probably very very lost and very very confused. I’d also still be trying to figure out who is the best person at making hamburgers (it’s you). Honestly, if it wasn’t for you, I would’ve never gotten into jojo, or at least I would’ve taken longer to find out about it.
@dailynonbinaryukako eli I remember when we first started talking and it was kinda awkward but then I was like ‘oh hey I made a blog’ and you were like 'oh hey I should make one too’ and now look at us. You’re a huge nerd and I love talking to you about ocs and memes and my 1000+ year old hawk son and I think our muses need to interact more but you’re probably another big reason for why I’ve stayed in this community so long... I mean heck you’re the reason I joined Daily Discord Hell!
@dailyhierophantgreen S C R E A M S ILY RAY I can’t believe you looked up to me once… I mean first of all I’m like 5 foot 4 there isn’t much to look up to and second I can’t believe my art is of the quality and skill for someone as amazing as you to look up to it…. anyways you’re an amazing person and I love all of your hierophant doodles and I hope that we can draw more stargreen ship stuff and memes this year!
@daily-caesar Adam, you’re hilarious and really nice, and I love all of your Caesar and Torq and Capt doodles (how do you even doodle them so fast??? Ho w)! You always enjoy my Fresh Memes ™, and you always manage to put a smile on my face.
@dailysmolnareff I don’t know if I’ve ever told you this, but you were one of my favorite daily blogs that I was scared and/or unsure of how to interact with. If only my oblivious past self could see us now. You are number one, Cami. Never forget that.
:mon:
@dailystoneplatinum you’re definitely another huge reason why I’ve been inspired to try so hard with art on this blog and art in general. You’re one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, a huge inspiration, and I also always enjoy talking with you (ah yes one in the morning talks about Jolyne’s stand and how it’s unfair that Pucci got Made in Heaven and Jolyne got silly string with sunglasses). I’m really happy we get to talk, and I hope to see more of your beautiful art!
@daily-giogio L E A D E R O F M U T E C R E W ok that’s obviously not enough, let me write more I love your Gio art so much it’s just so pretty?? side note Reset Gio’s design is also gorgeous and you just manage to kill me every time I see your art??? You’re also just a really funny person and I love talking with you! Or just listening to the void with you too that’s great as well
@dailyrobertspeedwagon peri, you’re super sweet and you’ve got great ideas and OCs, and I love all of them! To be honest, you’re much much better at art than I was when I was your age *visibly shudders thinking about old art*… keep up the great work!
@weeklyheavendio laVA WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN you deserve a medal for the amount you’ve helped my art style change like I draw something for the reset au and you manage to one up me with amazing art so I draw something else then you make a beautiful giF SO I HAVE TO MAKE AN EVEN BETTER GIF AND IT TOOK SEVERAL HOURS BUT IT WAS WORTH IT AND I LOVE ALL YOUR ART AND YOURE JUST A GREAT PERSON AAAAAA 11/10 would rewrite existence out of possibly canon game history again
@dailyshadowdio Cake I can’t believe I was once scared of you with your beautiful art.. I was scared to talk to you and the big wry man himself… Now I know. I know that I must believe in gravy. Always believe in gravy. Gremlin Dio and pretty much all your art gives me life. I don’t know what it is about how you draw Dio, but he just looks??? So good?????? Long story short you’re great cake
@dailyhamonpires we didn’t talk too much before the space au, but now that we’ve talked more, i’ve really enjoyed seeing you and your art! SOLU is a very sweet goop boy and deserves only the best. Keep up the amazing work!
@dailyavdol you’re one of the sweetest people I know! Your art style is also super unique and beautiful, and I love seeing different characters in it! Also seeing you and Cami talk is really sweet too :>
@marinebiologistjotaro whERE DO I EVEN START You are an absolute blessing. Do you even know how much I love marine life. Like I really love cephalopods the most but all marine life is just really cool and if I wasn’t sure I wanted to do something with animation in the future I’d want to do something with marine biology and so when I found your blog some couple of months ago I died of happiness I’ve also enjoyed all the little inside jokes we’ve made over the past few months. I still miss Barbara…
@badlydrawnmekandmoney !!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD OCS! GREAT PERSON! It’s always a lot of fun to talk to ya! You put up with all my shitty memes and actually genuinely seem to like them, too!
@dailyyoungmrskujo *insert good shit meme but in french* I love Jolyne’s mom/Jotaro’s wife, so when I found that someone had taken her character and turned her into a fully capable headstrong young woman, I was so excited! You’re really sweet, and I wish you luck with your new job and I hope we sometime get time to talk (despite timezones >_<).
@badlydrawnjotarocean we don’t talk much but I kind of admire you from a distance because you’re pretty cool and I’m also madly in love with Joji from the reset au I mean sweet ocs you got there friend I mean um how much water do you need to quench your thirst
@badlydrawn-p4nareff a quality baguette… a handsome baguette… a good baguette… have I ever said how much I love pol and how good your pol art is I mean sometimes he’s just a piece of string cheese but you still manage to make him look beautiful???? What are your secrets I'm also sorry I'm a huge nerd you probably are wondering why I tagged you right I mean uh I should stop aaaa

Best Banh Mi Hoi An
You will immediately fall in love with a sandwich commonly available in Vietnam. It is named as Banh Mi and is one of the locals and tourists favorite. This sandwich is a very common snack and specialty of the country, that is made with clean and fresh ingredients. If you are going to a boat trip or hiking, then this thing is one of the best options to keep in your back pack for a light meal. Hoi An welcomes most of the people from around the world and offer them a lot of delicious things. You will find a variety of places which serve delicious Banh Mi in Hoi An.
The history of Banh Mi
There is a variety of ingredients in the filling of the sandwich that is a part of the Vietnamese freedom and independence history. During the French colonialism era, the French used to think that the fish and rice which are used as the local food make the body weaker. The wheat flour, meat and vegetables, make the body stronger. They brought a variety of foods with them to Vietnam like carrots, cheese, meats, coffee and wheat. They asked the locals to grow wheat that failed badly because of the weather conditions and tropical climate. They tried to fill the food demand by importing from Europe with very high price. It was not possible for the local people of Vietnam to buy a lot of wheat from Europe because of the lack of money and resources.
(Best Banh Mi Hoi An)
The shipments of the wheat were disrupted until WWI. To fulfil the demand of food, some bakeries started producing the bread by mixing rice flour (that was easily available on low cost) in the lesser quantity of wheat floor. The baguette made by the mix of both flours was crustier, crispy, fluffy and lighter as compared to the whole wheat one. The other time two leading shipment companies in Saigon were seized and the French had to sail off for war by leaving the good behind in the German warehouses. After that those good became available in the market of Vietnam in very cheap rates. That was the time when the working class of Vietnam could afford the deli meats, pate, Cheese, butter, condensed milk and breads. The Vietnamese became able to customize the foods in the market with their local ingredients after the withdrawal of the French military. After the fall of Saigon, the refugees of South Vietnam fled to different areas where they introduced their recipe. It became a part of their culture and tradition.
Ingredients of Banh Mi
Banh mi has a huge variety of ingredients that cannot be restricted in any way. If you order from the stall the ingredient will be the local and organic whereas if you order from a very touristy, you will get a menu of different combinations. Some have the English menus with a lot of imported ingredients. The basic details of ingredients are as follows
Bread
The bread is inspired by the French colonial period as discussed in the history of Banh mi. It is not chewy and has a thin and crispy crust made by the combination of Flours. The crispy crust is considered as the most important identification of the sandwich.
Pate
The French spread plays an important role in the taste of the sandwich. Although, it is not considered much while picking the ingredients but it adds a subtle taste. This spread is made of duck livers or chicken.
Mayo
The butter and margarine is commonly available but still the mayo is used that gives richness to the Banh mi. The best Banh mi Hoi An has a lot of mayo that saves the bread from the moist filling and the crust remains crunchy.
Sauces
Mostly homemade sauces are used with different oils or pastes to the banh mi. Usually the small stands use maggi sauce that is made of soy and vegetable protein, imported from Switzerland. If you visit some places in Hoi an with big menus then you will find a variety of sauces.
Vegetables and herbs
Vegetables are used in both forms as pickled or fresh. Strips of fresh cucumber with the pickled carrot, papaya or daikon is used. The vegetables add richness to the fillings. Coriander and mint are used to add the fragrance. Sometimes other local herbs are also added to modify the flavor.
(Best Banh Mi Hoi An)
Proteins in banh mi
Cha Lua is a ground pork that is tightly packed in banana leaves after seasoning. Then it is steamed and used as thin slices. This is the most commonly available sandwich.
Thit Nguoi is the cubes of meat which are cooked and created in the shape of a log. It has strips of fat that can be cut in thin slices. It tastes like ham and very delicious filling.
Gio Thu is the Vietnamese cheese created by cooking the less desirable parts of the animal. It can be made from skin, tendon, tails and head meat. They are cooked until they release gelatin that is cooled down and used as thin slices.
Thit Nuong is the marinated and grilled pieces of pork over charcoal. It has dry, sweet and charcoal roasted flavor. The parts to be cooked depends on the chef.
Xa Xiu is the seasoned and aromatic pork created by Barbeque.
Nem Nuong is the small sausages and patties of ground pork with seasoning that is grilled on the charcoal.
Why The Taste of Bread is Better in Hoi an
The bread is the most important part in the making of the Banh mi. The shelf life of the crispiness of the bread is less because of the tropical climate due to that it is baked twice a day in some bakeries. Some places use the old method of the rice flour where as some people use the whole wheat flour that is now easily available in Hoi an. The bread is considered as the best because of the crisp and the pointed end. The dough of the bread is properly kneaded, and shaped before baking due to that it becomes like a small ear like shape after baking. The Banh mi likers look for this ear of bread before buying. Best banh mi Hoi An is the result of the best bread that is prepared by the French recipe. The bakeries of Hoi an follow the same recipe without changing it since 1800s. In the North and South of Vietnam, bakeries tried to copy the recipe without knowing the crafts and understanding of the procedure. Hoi an remained the center of the Banh mi in the early times. The bread here is traditional, exact and delicious.
Best Banh mi Hoi An
Hoi an has a lot of places serving the best and traditional Banh mi. The main location is the old town where you will find the stands selling the sandwich. A lot of places offer vegetarian options as well and the healthiest part is that, they use mostly organic vegetables and herbs. The main places serving the best banh mi Hoi An are:
Banh mi Phuong
You can easily recognize the place by their glass counter where different cooks assemble the Banh mi. There are crowds of people at the stand because of the delicious banh mo with its original flavor. It opens are 6:30 am to 9:30 pm daily and the price range is from 15000 VND to 35000 VND. They have almost every type of meat filling available like pork, pate, ham, sausages, grilled meat and more. Their meaty sauce makes it very rich. You can buy their original bread from the next door. You can also get this quick meal while exploring the attractions.
(Best Banh Mi Hoi An)
Phi Banh mi
This location is also available on trip advisor and is considered as one of the best places of banh mi Hoi an. It started in 2013 and the positive reviews make it among the top most. The opening timing is from 8:am to 8:pm daily and the cost is from 15,000 VND to 35,000 VND. The couple run this business named Phi and his wife Tau. They live in the old town. They also have a variety of filling and their banh mi is smaller than other places in low price. They also have an English menu with excellent selection of meats, vegetables, herbs and sauces.
(Best Banh Mi Hoi An)
Madam Khanh- The banh mi Queen
You will find one of the most amazing banh mi Hoi an at this place. It opens at 7:00am to 7:00pm every day and the price is 20,000 VND. This place is selling street food for over 30 years. The owners of the restaurant are often seen outside walking among the customers, filling their sandwiches. This place can easily be recognized or found by asking the locals. The sauce is the main power of the banh mi that is especially made and loved by the people. They have a plenty of option but the most amazing ones are the vegetarian banh mi. For the take away order, they give already prepared sandwiches so it is advised that ask for the freshly made.
Banh Mi Chay
Veitnam is the food heaven for the vegans and vegetarians. Banh mi Chay is run by a woman in old town. You will find only one kind of banh mi that will be the best one in Hoi an among the vegetarian option. She makes the sandwich full of diced mushrooms, tofu, chopped peanuts, slaw and herbs. A special kind of flavorful liquid is drizzled in the sandwich to moisten the bread that increases the flavor. It opens every day from 6:30 am to 10 am. Sometimes it closes when she sells out all of the banh mi. The price is 15,000 VND and you can get extra fillings for 5,000 VND.
Conclusion from different Banh mi
After trying a lot of places, it is very difficult to name one for the best banh mi. In Hoi an you will find a specialty of every banh mi. The bread, filling and the locations everything makes the place special to visit. The tip for the best banh mi is that you should ask for the freshly prepared so the crispy bread remains in it full flavor. If you want to take away for a trip, then select the ingredients carefully or as the seller.
Everyone has his own choice of flavor. Most of the places in Hoi an use their local herbs and vegetables so they are fresh and organic. You can make the choice according to you and if you cannot make a choice then trying the vegetarian options is the best decision. This traditional street food makes its visitors crave for it after they leave Vietnam.

Top 10 Da Lat dishes you should not miss
Marketing Advisor đã viết bài trên http://www.ticvietnam.vn/top-10-da-lat-dishes-you-should-not-miss/
Top 10 Da Lat dishes you should not miss
Banh mi xiu mai chen (baguette with shumai bowl)
This is an absolute must-try dish in Da Lat cuisine. The shumai balls are served in a bowl of hot sauce, in which you can dip the baguette. You can also ask for fried pork skin or chilli pepper to add to the soup.
Address: Mrs. Thuy’s, at the intersection of Bui Thi Xuan and Thong Thien Hoc streets, Anh Sang Hamlet.
Price: VND4,000/shumai ball ($0.17), VND2,000/baguette ($0.09).
Banh can (mini pancake)
Mini pancake is a popular breakfast dish in the Central Highlands city of Da Lat. Travellers can find it in many places such as Tang Bat Ho Street and Anh Sang Hamlet.
The pancakes, filled with eggs and slightly burned, are eaten with fish sauce. Some places add meat balls to the sauce to make it tastier. A serving of 5 pairs of pancakes usually costs VND20,000 ($0.86).
Bánh uot long ga (steamed rice paper with chicken intestine)
Many people like this dish for its unusual taste. It is a bit sour as it is served with chicken salad rather than the more common pork roll. The dish is made of simple ingredients like rice paper and chicken meat or intestine mixed with fish sauce.
Address: Tang Bat Ho Street, Phan Dinh Phung Street
Price: VND35,000 ($1.5)
Banh trang nuong (grilled rice paper)
Grilled rice paper is becoming more and more popular in Da Lat with an increasing number of restaurants serving the dish. At these restaurants, you can sit near a coal stove, watching the chef make this dish. The chef applies a little oil to the rice paper and then adds shrimp paste, cheese and green pepper. An egg is later added and stirred with chopsticks until the dish is fully grilled. It tastes even better with fried onion and pork floss.
Grilled rice paper is usually sold from 3 p.m. until night at street food stalls in Da Lat Market, Thong Thien Hoc Street, Nguyen Van Troi Street, Hoang Dieu – Tran Nhat Duat.
Bun bo Hue (beef noodle soup)
Bun bo Hue is popular for its tasty broth and meaty components. The dish is quite popular in Da Lat and usually eaten for breakfast. Each restaurant has a different recipe for beef noodle soup, but the common ingredients are beef, pork roll (gio) or deep-friend pork roll.
Address: Anh Sang Hamlet or Ba Thang Tu Street
Price: VND40,000 ($1.72)
Nem nuong (grilled pork sausage)
Nem nuong, though not quite popular with locals in Da Lat, remains the top choice for lunch among travellers. This simple dish needs a lot of preparation before eating. The grilled pork sausage is eaten with greasy yellow sauce made from pork broth and ground chilli. The fat of the pork, the sweet taste of the sauce, and the crispiness of the fried rice paper makes this dish unforgettable.
Address: Hoang Van Thu, Phan Dinh Phung, Bui Thi Xuan streets
Price: VND45,000 ($1.94)
Bun rieu (crab noodles)
Crab noodles is not quite popular in this city. Travellers can find the dish at an eatery on Nguyen Cong Tru Street or Mac Dinh Chi Street. The owner said the eatery has been around for 20 years.
The highlight of the dish is the sweet crab paste made from paddy crabs. It also has pork bone and blood paste. Cooked tomatoes make the dish more delicous.
A normal bowl costs VND25,000 ($1.08) and a super bowl, VND35,000 ($1.5). The dish is served with fresh herbs and vegetables.
Mi Quang (Quang-style noodle)
Not the birthplace of Quang-style noodle, Da Lat invented a different style with the dish served with more sauce. It looks delicious with the red-orange sauce, yellow noodles, and cashew-colored meat. You can eat it with vegetables and herbs.
Address: Nguyen Cong Tru Street, Nguyen Du Street
Price: VND35,000 ($1.5)
Lau ga la e (chicken hot pot with basil leaves)
The hot dishes are always sought after at night. While the south prefers chicken hot pot with aganonerion (giang) leaves and in the north it is chicken hot pot with wormwood, in Da Lat hot pot of chicken with basil leaves has been popular for the past two years. The chicken is eaten with fresh bamboo and basil leaves and pepper lemon sauce, and is a mixture of sweet and chilli tastes.
A serving, including half a chicken, a large noodle disk, a plate of mushrooms, and a plate of basil leaf and vegetables, costs VND200,000 ($8.6).
Kem bo (avocado ice cream)
Though Da Lat is usually cold in the evenings, people like to eat avocado or fruit ice cream around this time. The fatty flavor of the ice cream combined with the taste of avocado, the famous fruit of this mountainous city, turns this simple snack into an amazing dish.
Address: Nguyen Van Troi Street
Price: VND20,000 ($0.86)

Vietnam street food: 10 essential dishes
(CNN)Not only did President Barack Obama sample some of Vietnam’s finest local eats in Hanoi in May, but his guide was none other than “Parts Unknown” host Anthony Bourdain.
“There is no better place to entertain the leader of the free world, in my opinion, than one of these classic, funky family-run noodle shops you find all over Hanoi,” says Bourdain. “Dinner and a beer costs about $6. I’m guessing the President doesn’t get a lot of state dinners like this.”
President or not, you don’t need a celebrity guide to make the most of this nation’s eats.

MUST WATCH
The cheapest and one of the most delicious places to find Vietnamese cuisine is in a traditional open-air market.
Here, single-dish food stalls, run mostly by women, offer finely crafted dishes passed from mother to daughter for generations.
Ready to pull up a plastic stool?
Here are 10 foods that will give you a perfect introduction to Vietnam’s best street eats.
1. Pho
What list of Vietnamese cuisine would be complete without pho?
It’s almost impossible to walk a block in Vietnam’s major cities without bumping into a crowd of hungry patrons slurping noodles at a makeshift pho stand.
This simple staple, consisting of a salty broth, fresh rice noodles, a sprinkling of herbs and chicken or beef, features predominately in the local diet — and understandably so.
It’s cheap, tasty and widely available at all hours.
2. Bun cha
Pho might be Vietnam’s most famous dish, but bun cha is the top choice when it comes to lunchtime in the capital.
Just look for the clouds of meaty smoke after 11 a.m. when street-side restaurants in Hanoi start grilling up small patties of seasoned pork and slices of marinated pork belly over a charcoal fire.
Once they’re charred and crispy, the morsels are served with a bowl of a fish sauce-heavy broth, a basket of herbs and a helping of rice noodles.
Bun cha sets often come with the delicious nem cua be — fried crab spring rolls.
Still not convinced? It’s what Obama ate during his night out with Bourdain.
3. Xoi
Savory sticky rice is less of an accompaniment to meals in Vietnam; it is more a meal itself.
The glutinous staple comes with any number of mix-ins (from slivers of chicken or pork to fried or preserved eggs), but almost always with a scattering of dried shallots on top.
4. Banh xeo
A good banh xeo is a crispy crepe bulging with pork, shrimp and bean sprouts, plus the garnish of fresh herbs that are characteristic of most authentic Vietnamese dishes.
To enjoy one like a local, cut it into manageable slices, roll it up in rice paper or lettuce leaves and dunk it in whatever special sauce the chef has mixed up for you.
5. Goi cuon
These light and fresh spring rolls are a wholesome choice when you’ve been indulging in too much of the fried food in Vietnam.
The translucent parcels are first packed with salad greens, a sliver of meat or seafood and a layer of coriander, before being neatly rolled and dunked in Vietnam’s favorite condiment — fish sauce.
Not ready to give up on the fried ones?
In the north these fried parcels go by the name nem ran, while southerners call them cha gio.
The crispy shell surrounds a soft veggie and meat filling.
6. Bun bo nam bo
This bowl of vermicelli noodles — widely popular in Hanoi — comes sans broth, keeping the ingredients from becoming sodden and the various textures intact.
The tender slices of beef mingle with crunchy peanuts and bean sprouts and are flavored with fresh herbs, crisp dried shallots and a splash of fish sauce and fiery chili pepper.
7. Cao lau
This pork noodle dish from Hoi An is a bit like the various cultures that visited the trading port at its prime.
The thicker noodles are similar to Japanese udon, the crispy won-ton crackers and pork are a Chinese touch, while the broth and herbs are clearly Vietnamese.
Authentic cao lau is made only with water drawn from the local Ba Le well.
8. Banh mi
The French may have brought with them the baguette, but Vietnam takes it to a different level.
How, exactly, depends on what end of the country you’re in.
In the north, chefs stick to the basic elements of carbohydrate, fat and protein — bread, margarine and pat — but head south and your banh mi may contain a more colorful combination of cheese, cold cuts, pickled vegetables, sausage, fried egg, fresh cilantro and chili sauce.
9. Bot chien
Ho Chi Minh City’s favorite street snack, bot chien is popular with both the after-school and the after-midnight crowd.
Chunks of rice flour dough are fried in a large wok until crispy, and then an egg is broken into the mix.
Once cooked, it’s served with slices of papaya, shallots and green onions, before more flavor is added with pickled chili sauce and rice vinegar.
10. Ca phe trung
Vietnamese “egg coffee” is technically a drink, but we prefer to put it in the dessert category.
The creamy soft, meringue-like egg white foam perched on the dense Vietnamese coffee will have even those who don’t normally crave a cup of joe licking their spoons with delight.
In Hanoi, follow the tiny alley between the kitschy souvenir shops at 11 Hang Gai into the clearing and up several flights of increasingly dicey stairs to pair your ca phe trung with an unbeatable view of Hoan Kiem Lake.

Oh, le's baguette, how delicious and basic...I could roll by for your cha gio every day. The 5-spice pork belly could use a bit more 5-spice and be more pork-bellyish (thicker cut? fattier?) and there could be some mint or basil or other fresh herbs to go with the lettuce in your noodle bowls ("bun" for those who care), but overall, you are a sweet, fun spot to dine and your service style is a stellar example of how to make friends and win at the cafe game. Well done! http://ift.tt/2ilUsQx

Bawai’s Vietnamese Kitchen Opens in Uptown Parade BGC
Despite the recent enthusiasm with Vietnamese cuisine in the country, I have to admit that I have very little experience dining at Vietnamese restaurants. The first and only time I tried it a few years ago was at a restaurant that seemed to serve fast food quality dishes and I was obviously not impressed. I thought that I simply did not fancy Vietnamese food so I had no intention of trying it again. But thanks to the recommendation of a friend, I decided to drop by a newly-opened restaurant in Bonifacio Global City and it totally changed the way I look and appreciate Vietnamese cuisine.
Bawai’s Vietnamese Kitchen opened last April 28, 2017 at the ground floor of Uptown Parade in Bonifacio Global City. Bawai’s, which means maternal grandmother in Vietnamese, is actually a fan-favorite in Tagaytay and their success has led to the opening of several other branches including Whiteplains, Nuvali, and now in BGC. I had actually just come down from a vacation in Tagaytay that afternoon when I decided to try something a bit healthier than my usual fare, and I am certainly glad I did.
The interiors of Bawai’s convey a casual and very homey ambiance, similar to having a home-cooked meal prepared by a loving aunt or lola. The restaurant is quite spacious, with more than enough seats and room for those long drawn-out conversations.
We took a seat at the comfy sofas and we ordered their specialty drinks to quench our thirst from the long afternoon drive.
I’m not a big coffee drinker but I wanted to try something different so I got the Ca Phe Sua Da (P130) which is Vietnamese iced milk coffee. I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it and it was different from the other usual coffee drinks. I also tried the Nuoc Da Me (P105) or iced sweet tamarind drink. This one was quite unique as it had big chunks of tamarind at the bottom which you can stir to create a sweet and refreshing blend.
Coffee lovers will definitely want to get the Ca Phe Sua Nuong (P120) which is a Vietnamese hot drip coffee with condensed milk. My auntie says that it is really strong and good, so I’ll just take her word for it.
Vietnam is known for their spring rolls so we tried the Goi Cuon (P320) which is traditional Vietnamese fresh rolls filled with vermicelli, vegetables, pork, and shrimp. The colorful presentation alone already made me feel healthier and more energetic. I took a crunchy bite and enjoyed the flavors swirling in my mouth.
The combination of the pork and shrimp with green leafy vegetables wrapped inside thin rice paper is a delightful and healthier alternative to the usual appetizers I have. It is so refreshing! I didn’t expect that I would enjoy it that much, but I did. Add some peanut sauce for even more exciting flavors.
Of course, I also had to try the Cha Gio (P245) which is crispy fried imperial rolls with minced meat, herbs and vegetables. This fried spring rolls is something more familiar and goes well with the sweet chilli sauce provided.
Continuing with the other healthy choices, the Bawai's Garden Salad (P325) is one of their recommended salads. This comes with arugula, lettuce, herbs, and ripe mangoes topped with prawns and tamarind dressing. One thing I like about the dishes I have tried so far is that even if they come with lots of vegetables, they do not lack in flavors at all. The dressings and sauces that accompany each dish provides the balancing ingredient and that is why I unexpectedly enjoyed even the salads.
The Bahn Mi (P260) is one of the classic Vietnamese items. This baguette comes filled with pork, vegetables and pork paste. I think the bread may be a bit too thick and tough for me to bite, but sandwich lovers would enjoy filling their tummies with this huge serving.
The specialty of any Vietnamese restaurant will always be their noodles, and Bawai’s offers a good selection from dry noodles to soups. We started with the Bun Tom (P360) which has dry noodles with sauteed buttered prawns topped with vegetables and roasted nuts.
Sprinkle a bit of the sweet sesame sauce on top of the noodles and mix them all together to spread the ingredients. I definitely love the buttered prawns with goes so well with the noodles. I also don’t feel guilty because of all the greens I’ve eaten, which makes this comfort food with a conscience.
Then it was time to try the Pho Bo (P365), the traditional Vietnamese beef noodle soup that comes with herbs and spices. This is the highlight of my meal, and I was so happy when I took my first sip. The light beefy flavors infused in the warm broth is really something that can perk up almost anyone. This is far from what I had before during that first visit to a Vietnamese restaurant where the flavors were bland and depressing.
The herbs and vegetables give it a unique taste and aroma, and this is a soup that I would want to have whenever I get a cold or a fever. It’s simple, but very endearing.
Bawai’s surprised me even further when I saw that they also offered Entrées to accompany their noodles dishes. Now that’s what The Hungry Kat really likes. The Com Suon Cha (P435) is a grilled pork belly glazed with a caramel-lemongrass marinade then served with mushroom egg pie. I wanted to order rice but I was already quite full so I just ate it together with the dry noodles.
Bawai’s even has the Tom Rang Me (P590) which has big Black Tiger Prawns cooked with a sweet tamarind paste then garnished with herbs and sesame seeds. What else can I ask for? I thought that I will just be having some noodles for myself but I ended up having all these flavorful appetizers and main dishes as well.
To cap off our amazing Vietnamese meal, we also tried their desserts including the Ban Da Lon (P80), a yellow mung bean and pandan cake topped with coconut paste and sesame seeds. The Che Bap (P80) is a sweet sticky rice with corn and coconut milk while the Vietnamese Ice Cream (P90) is a coffee-flavored ice cream with coffee jelly. All these desserts provided a great ending to an afternoon of new discoveries and favorites. I would like to thank Bawai’s BGC owner Ms. Rhea Laforteza Hao for guiding me on my first authentic Vietnamese dining experience. Visit them at Uptown Parade and you might end up discovering a new favorite as well.

Gio’s Baguettes & More, 3805 Ocean View Blvd., Montrose, CA 91020
The owner visited Paris and fell in love; the café is filled with images of the Eiffel Tower. The baguettes and croissants are imported from France…but they must be imported frozen and par-baked because they aren’t as good as what you’d expect.
The menu and pastry cases offer plenty of options. They have breakfast sandwiches, baguette sandwiches, salads, soups, crepes and paninis along with freshly baked goods – muffins, cookies, cream puffs, mini tartlets, éclairs, and croissants.
* Breakfast croissant ($5.45): features finely sliced tender French ham (a generous neat pile, it’s not as salty as American ham), thin slices of cheese, lettuce and tomato. Made with care, the croissant wasn’t layered/flaky enough but the overall sandwich was still quite good
* Latte: They serve Illy coffee and espresso drinks. The latte didn’t have foam art but they did make it nice and foamy. It was a bit bitter.
* Baguette: I had it cold, it was chewy and had a par-baked quality
While there is free wi-fi, the café is small and there’s only one power outlet. The tables inside are all meant for 2 people.
3.5 out of 5 stars
